Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART)
A structured, evidence-based approach that uses eye movements and voluntary image replacement to reduce the distress held in traumatic memories — often in fewer sessions than traditional therapy.
Rapid Relief from Trauma and Distressing Memories
Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) is a relatively brief, structured therapy that uses guided eye movements and a technique called voluntary image replacement to change the way distressing memories are stored in the brain. Rather than requiring you to talk through painful experiences in detail, ART works directly with the imagery and sensations associated with a memory — shifting how it feels in the body and how it registers in the mind.
Many clients experience significant relief within one to five sessions. ART does not erase memories; it changes their emotional charge. You retain the factual knowledge of what happened while the distress, intrusive imagery, and physical reactivity associated with that memory are reduced or resolved.
How ART Works
During an ART session, Andrea guides your eyes in a series of smooth, horizontal movements — similar to the eye movements that occur naturally during REM sleep. While your eyes move, you hold the distressing image or memory in mind. At key points, you are invited to replace the original image with one of your own choosing — something neutral or positive. This voluntary image replacement is central to ART's effectiveness: it gives you agency over your own healing and allows the nervous system to release the distress stored in the original memory.
Identify the target
You and Andrea identify the memory, image, or experience you want to work with. You do not need to describe it in detail.
Eye movement sets
Andrea guides your eyes in smooth horizontal movements while you hold the target in mind. This activates the brain's natural processing mechanisms.
Voluntary image replacement
At key moments, you replace the distressing image with one you choose — something neutral, peaceful, or empowering. You are always in control.
Body scan and close
Andrea checks in with how your body feels and ensures you leave the session feeling grounded and settled, not activated.
Who ART May Help
ART is used with a wide range of presentations. It may be a good fit if you are experiencing:
- Trauma or PTSD from a single event or repeated experiences
- Intrusive memories, flashbacks, or nightmares
- Anxiety, phobias, or panic responses tied to specific memories or triggers
- Grief and loss that feels stuck or unresolved
- Depression connected to past experiences
- Performance anxiety or blocks rooted in past events
- Relationship patterns that trace back to early experiences
Frequently Asked Questions About ART
Do I have to talk about what happened in detail?
No. ART does not require you to describe traumatic events in detail. You hold the memory in mind while Andrea guides the process — you are never asked to narrate or relive the experience verbally.
How many sessions does ART take?
Many people experience meaningful relief in one to five sessions. The number depends on the complexity of what you are working with and how your nervous system responds. Andrea will discuss realistic expectations with you during your consultation.
Is ART the same as EMDR?
ART and EMDR both use eye movements, but they are distinct therapies with different protocols and techniques. ART's voluntary image replacement is a key differentiator — it gives you direct agency over how the memory is transformed. Andrea is trained in ART specifically.
Is ART evidence-based?
Yes. ART has been studied in clinical trials and is recognized as an evidence-based treatment for PTSD and trauma by several professional bodies. It is listed in SAMHSA's National Registry of Evidence-Based Programs and Practices.
Can ART be combined with other therapies?
Yes. Andrea often integrates ART with other modalities — including brainspotting, somatic approaches, and parts-based work — depending on what each client needs. ART can also be used within a therapy intensive for concentrated, deeper work.
